The Mermaid

I was rummaging through old photographs and found this one from my birthday trip last year to Lauritzen Gardens. I quite like this mermaid statue.

When the botanical garden was first opened, I drove by it often (it’s right off the Interstate) and wondered what would be so wonderful about walking among a lot of plants. Mind you, I love gardening, but couldn’t see why anyone would want to visit a big garden. Never having been to a botanical garden, I was unaware of how organised and interesting it could be.

It’s really quite amazing. Each area is beautiful and separate. There is a rose garden, an oriental garden, gardens with lilypads, herbs, and even a garden with a big model train running through it. There is a garden where various planters and wrought iron gates from throughout Omaha have been transplanted, each with a plaque showing its original spot in the city.

Indoors, there is a lovely restaurant (indoor garden included) with quite yummy chicken salad sandwiches with grapes and walnuts mixed in.

If you’re ever in Omaha, you really must go.

  1. We have some wonderful gardens within the National Trust for Scotland, Every time we go there I am either uplifter and impressed with the beauty and organisation, or depressed at how my own garden does not match, in any way these beautiful areas…although I (and I must include the Lady of the house) do aspire to achieve what we know we should be doing!

  3. IP – You’ll have to post pictures of your garden sometime (or have you?).

Fab – Thanks! It was a good day.

Gem – Kew.. is this where the Chihuly sculptures are?

Flighty – Indeed. I never thought walking in a really large garden would be so relaxing. I like the herb garden… I love the scent of live, growing herbs. I might plan to do one of my own sometime soon, weather permitting (or window permitting.. one of those)
