Another day; another tornado

It seems the tornado has missed us, but one landed in the midst of a boyscout camp http://www.ketv.com/news/16579276/detail.html.

I watched the weather live over the Internet and it showed about 10 swirly things on the map.    Outside, the clouds looked quite spooky… the dark sections would join together, and form a lighter layer below.   The air was humid with jets of cold blowing through it.   It was quite odd!   Then the rain came down exceptionally hard, mixed in with a small amount of hail.

My daughter is doing better with these weather alerts.  The other day, I explained how tornados formed, and she’s quite the scientist now.    She gets a little spooked, but she’s interested in the cloud formations now, and how humid it is.

I’m not sure how fast a tornado would come out of the sky (I wondered this as I was watching the clouds moving together).  I imagine it wouldn’t be as quick as lightning, for example.  If you were standing there, it would probably be one of those slow-motion events, and I’d hope to have time to get out of the way.   They always say to go down to the basement.. it’s “the safest place” but how safe would that actually be, I wonder.

I guess it beats standing outside.. watching the clouds.

  1. Yes… there are 4 dead and 48 injured; linked in the post. Sad thing… being in the midst of a campground with just a few buildings doesn’t give you much protection. They should actually have a storm shelter there if they host these camps often (and I believe they do).

  2. The problem with watching is that tornados can form almost instantly. They can be pretty hard to see if they’re not filled with rain or debris. The one that hit near our house in ’67 wasn’t visible until it filled with dirt and debris from the bottom up. It looked like someone rapidly filling a vase with dirt.

  3. Can’t imagine what it is like to be close to one of these things. We don’t get them in the West of Scotland, thank goodness. ! think I would be terrified.

We have seen programmes about those who go tornado-hunting…..not for science, but for fun so that they can get photographs!…..are these folk nuts?

  4. We moan about our weather here in England but we are so lucky compared to other parts of the world!
Take care and have a good weekend! xx
