Another day; another tornado

It seems the tornado has missed us, but one landed in the midst of a boyscout camp http://www.ketv.com/news/16579276/detail.html.

I watched the weather live over the Internet and it showed about 10 swirly things on the map.    Outside, the clouds looked quite spooky… the dark sections would join together, and form a lighter layer below.   The air was humid with jets of cold blowing through it.   It was quite odd!   Then the rain came down exceptionally hard, mixed in with a small amount of hail.

My daughter is doing better with these weather alerts.  The other day, I explained how tornados formed, and she’s quite the scientist now.    She gets a little spooked, but she’s interested in the cloud formations now, and how humid it is.

I’m not sure how fast a tornado would come out of the sky (I wondered this as I was watching the clouds moving together).  I imagine it wouldn’t be as quick as lightning, for example.  If you were standing there, it would probably be one of those slow-motion events, and I’d hope to have time to get out of the way.   They always say to go down to the basement.. it’s “the safest place” but how safe would that actually be, I wonder.

I guess it beats standing outside.. watching the clouds.

And the weather fun doesn’t end..

Tornado Warning:

Issued at: 2:26 AM CDT 6/8/08, expires at: 3:00 AM CDT 6/8/08

The NWS in omaha has issued a tornado warning for: douglas county in east central Nebraska, this includes the city of omaha, north central sarpy county in east central Nebraska, extreme southeastern Washington county in east central Nebraska, western pottawattamie county in southwest Iowa,
Until 300 am cdt.

At 224 am cdt, national weather service doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. The most dangerous part of the storm was located near central omaha, moving northeast at 54 mph.

Locations impacted include, omaha, council bluffs and underwood,  The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a workbench or a piece of sturdy furniture. If a basement is not available, seek shelter on the lowest level of the building. Go to an interior room or hallway. Use blankets or pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows.

The combination of rain and darkness may obscure this tornado. Take cover now! if you wait to see the tornado or wait to hear it coming, it may be too late to get to a safe place. Go to the lowest level of the building. Stay away from windows and glass doors.

Driving School and Other Exciting Things

Saturday, I am off to defensive driving class, because I obviously need some help in that way, and one less point on my license.   🙂    Who would have thought that I once taught driving instruction to impressionable young children.

The lesson I have learned:   do not drive behind anyone.  Ever.    I have seen too many crashes lately (not all my own, thank you) where even the 2-second rule fails miserably.    Keep your eyes on the road.   Give people space.  Stop being in a hurry to get somewhere.   Enjoy life, for God’s sake.    So you get a little extra time with the radio in the morning or afternoon.   It’s a good thing.

It is darned cold in this part of the world.   While parts of the world are flooding, this part is all snowy and -13F windchill (soon to be colder, I’m sure).   All the more reason for a warm fire, I say, and not going outside.    I always forget (always) that xilinx is not the cold month.  If xilinx seems cold, just wait until January and 试镜床戏(巨肉高h).

Brr…    This is where a trip to the beach and a nice margarita in hand sound really, really good!

A Very Scientific Snow Comparison

Jan 2006

Jan 2007

for lack of something better to do) Top picture, Jan 2007. Lower picture, Dec 2007. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve had our fair share of snow this season. If I remember correctly, January of 2007 was our first decent snowfall of last winter (beginning in 试镜床戏(巨肉高h) 2006 for we Nebraskans). It wasn’t even decent enough to cover the grass.

Our snowfall this season compares to a good snowfall that you normally see on a ski slope. Well, a ski slope that doesn’t get 5 or 6 feet of snow, but still.. you could ski this hill if you wanted to.

Is it too early to say that I miss summer?

The Interstate

Today, we ventured out in the aftermath of the blizzard. The side streets were not plowed, but our 4wd got through it.

Interstate travel was 25mph all the way through. No real stopping and starting occurred, which was good, because it went from snowpacked to icey, and back again.

On the way home, I saw the most amazing thing… it was an accident in motion. A big one. A semi-truck (day cab) plowed into the interstate center divider… the concrete one. Head on. Behind him, 5 or 6 cars skidded to a stop.. all of them in varying degrees off of where they should be.. some at 90 degrees, some 180.. Some of them none too happy!

At least they didn’t hit the truck. I believe one hit the same divider that the truck did, but overall, everyone came to a safe stop. Whether they bounced off of each other, only they know. I am just glad I wasn’t on that side of the Interstate.

Blizzard!

Not only is there a TON of snow falling, but school and work is cancelled.

Up above is the current weathercam shot of the downtown area.

We ventured out in our 4wd this morning to try to get The Little Kid to daycare.. the one the school sponsors.. that is always open. It was open, but there was only one kid there so far, and the one staff who was there doubted they would be open for much of the day. We decided to go home.

I checked in at work, and found the office closed to “all but essential personnel”. I was guessing this didn’t include me. About 15 minutes later, my boss called me at home to say, “stay home”.

This is the second official snow day I’ve had in the last year. At Mutual of Omaha, we NEVER had them. On a lucky day, we would be excused an hour or two early, en mass, so that we would take an hour or two to get out of the parking garage. I exaggerate, but I’m sure you get my meaning.

If the snow lets up, it may be “build a snowman” time later.

Weather Stinks

I’m tired of the weather. It’s felt like -20F here all week. I’m beginning to doubt the global warming theory, so I’m choosing to turn my heat up to 95 degrees, just to burn more fossil fuels. Obviously, global warming has not descended on this part of the globe yet.

Ok, I’m not serious, but it IS darn cold.

I still have to wear career-appropriate shoes outside. My feet are permanently frozen.

Enough is enough.

Snowblowing

Today I learned to operate the snowblower we had handed down to us a few years ago. I’ve used a snowblower before, but nothing quite as big as the one we have now. Once I got used to it, it didn’t seem like a major thing.

The snow was 4-6 inches deep, not counting the drifting. It’s a heavy snow; one that would be good for snowmen.

I got the driveway cleaned off, then had the little kid put on her snow gear so we could get the sledding done while I was already bundled up.

Treading through a couple of inches of snow, uphill, is not an easy task, but we managed to get to the sledding hill, where she took off 5 or 6 times, then decided it was too cold. She hopped in the sled and I pulled her most of the way home.

Just when I thought it was going to be another winter with no snow and reasonably warm temperatures. I keep forgetting that January through March are our severe winter months. It’s easy to forget with those 50 degree xilinx days.
