Wierd Weather in Nebraska

Ok, so it’s 40 degrees and it’s raining, sleeting and thundering. Go figure. Later, it’s supposed to snow.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect… Snow…heavy at times…will continue this evening. The heaviest snow through 8 PM is expected to be from near Fremont south through Wahoo to Lincoln. Snowfall rates in this band may reach 2 inches per hour…with some thunder-snow possible. Otherwise…snowfall rates will average around a half inch to an inch per hour. Snowfall through 8 PM will generally be around 1 to 3 inches. As winds increase later this evening to 15 to 30 mph…expect blowing and drifting snow to increase across the area with visibilities dropping below a half mile at times.

Up Too Early

It’s Sunday, and I had to get up at 5am so I could be mid-town by 6 to set up for the big annual fundraiser. Two laptops, two printers, a wireless router, 2 keyboards, 2 mice, a USB hub and making sure it all worked… plus moving one of the laptops and corresponding cables… twice.

It reminded me too much of the several months that I had a paper route and had to get up at 4 so I could deliver papers to an apartment complex. When I got home at 7am, I slept for the rest of the day.

That’s how I feel.. like I want to sleep for the rest of the day.

Can someone do my grocery shopping, please? 🙂

The Bar Scene

Last night, The Little Kid went with her sister to The Lion King (The Broadway Musical). We had a last-minute invitation to my husband’s friend’s 50th birthday party. It was a bar in Crescent, Iowa. They hired a band.

When I was in my early 30’s, we hung out at a lot of bars, because we followed a particular band.

I don’t miss hanging out at bars, drinking beer, breathing in second-hand smoke. And franky, by the time the band started playing (9 pm), it was already past my bedtime.

I would never make it in NYC, would I?

The Annual Request for Money

At my office, there is a “profit” side and a “non-profit” side. Each year, there is a big fund drive to help keep the non-profit side going. The non-profit side has something to do with homeless shelters.

They brought in soup, rolls and dessert, and had a speaker talk to us. The man was a pretty sturdy looking man who used to play football. He told us his story about being raised in a good family, where his dad had graduated from a prestigious college in the area. His childhood was good. He has 6 brothers. His mother stayed at home while his father worked to support his family.

During the football playing years, he got into the party scene; alcohol, drugs, chasing women. He was married with a young son, and he pushed his family away because he couldn’t give up the alcohol, drugs and women.

He went to the homeless shelter because he wanted to be forgotten, curl up and die. He felt he wasn’t worthy of forgiveness from God or anyone else.

Then he met a couple of our employees. One day, he decided to talk to one of them. At the end of the conversation, he was given a hug. He said it was the first time he felt worth a darn in ages. He walked away sobbing. It changed his life to know that people would care about destitute people… I mean, really care.

They wanted to let us know our money would be going to something good.

I haven’t decided what to give. Part of me just wanted to give some time doing something useful at the homeless shelter.

The Things People Say

For some silly reason, someone at work thought it would be a good idea just to toss out names of people who were skinny and people who were slightly overweight. I made the “slightly overweight list”. This was coming from the 350+ pound man.

I personally have nothing against weight. I think some things are better left unsaid, though, like judging a coworker’s weight…. out loud.

I spent the rest of the day trying to excuse that. I mean, people say dumb stuff all the time that could hurt people’s feelings.

Like the lady who said, the night of our all-night upgrade, “Now you’ll know what it’s like to not have a weekend.” Ok. We’re not overnight workers most of the time, but our network admin works plenty of weekends upgrading servers when no one is around. Plenty of IT people already have a good idea of what it’s like to not have a weekend.

What’s a dumb thing you’ve heard someone say lately?

What IS Sleep?

Yesterday, we got more of a break that we expected: a 3-hour lunch and we were done for the day at 11:30pm. We had to go back from 7am to 9am this morning and finish up.

I admit I’m a little short-fused. I took a nap for 2 hours this afternoon, but it wasn’t enough.

Overall, the upgrade went well… my boss said much better than before. I’d like to think it’s because we were all focused and working together, and organized.

My job was to determine all of the laptops that would be affected by the upgrade, create a sign-in list for each person to document their pick-up time and when they needed the laptop returned, mark the individual cubby for each laptop in the back room and ensure everyone in the office was upgraded to Windows XP.

This was my prep work before all of the hands-on stuff yesterday.

Last year, the error-rate on just determining the laptops involved was 30%. This time, less than 1% off, thankyouverymuch.

It was interesting to see the process. I’m glad it’s over, though.
