I was reading from “Life is a Verb” last night, and something struck me. I thought I would write it down while it was fresh in my mind. It goes like this:
“Creating inclusion [a simple mindfulness that others might have a different reality from our own] requires being generous. Most often it consists of simply extending a hand. That’s hard to do if you are grasping tightly to your sand, your rightness, your belief system, your superiority, your assumptions about others, your definition of normal.”
I think it’s safe to say that there are a lot of us grasping tightly onto our belief system. One of the goals of my life over the last several months has been to be as generous as I have always wanted to be.
It’s a part of remaking myself.

“We will extend the hand of friendship if you unclench your fist”. This seems like a sensible policy.
People clench their fists for many reasons, but more often than not because they’re scared or they think you’re about to hit them first.
The quotation from “Life is a verb” sums up my philosphy, as you know. It took me over 40 years to get this far and I’m hoping I’ve got at least another 40 to improve.
There’s always another side to the story – people should think “am I always right?” If the answer is “yes” then carry on but if it’s “no” then perhaps the person who cut in front of the queue ahead of you was not trying to destroy your way of life and sell your children into slavery. Keep your wallet out of temptation’s way but trust that a homeless guy might not always use your 5 dollars to buy booze.
It’s nice to be nice. Being crapped on from time to time is a small tax on a huge benefit to humanity; the power of “we are in this together”.
