I have an ear for accents (doesn’t everyone?). I’m amazed each time that I watch House, MD that I can’t detect any sign whatsoever that Hugh Laurie is British. His accent is perfectly American. I keep waiting for a sign of any sort that he is not authentically American.
How does he DO that?
“If you’re going to repeat everything I say, this conversation is going to take twice as long,” he just said to a patient whose husband is feeding her crap in her oatmeal to cut down her sex drive. (idiot)
Ok… I’m getting really hooked on this show. You may even be able to watch full episodes at that link if you’ve not seen it.
Updated:
Hugh Laurie’s Conan O’Brien video (too funny). Listen to Conan’s humorous attempt at a British accent, and the response to it (“There might be a street where they talk like that”) lol.

……AND that we know him primarily as a comedy actor in shows like Black Adder and A Little Fry & Laurie (with Stephen Fry).
Certainly a versatile actor and a jolly good thing too.

I’m working through season one on DVD in a kind of part-time manner. Is it me or do a lot of the scenarios always come down to sex? 🙂

When one says “American accent,” I always ask: “Which one?” Like Britain, we have a bunch. Laurie effects an accent that is rather mid-western. That’s the one that most American TV talking heads use because it is fairly neutral. (I could be prejudiced here!)
True… I think it *is* very midwestern. It’s funny that when he does the American accent, it’s in a lower tone than his English accent.
