I was reminded of this while talking to Ian earlier today.
One day, many years ago, I was in my apartment with my cat, Gizmo, a himalayan. I went out to the balcony and closed the sliding glass door, which, for some reason, caused the lock to engage. This isn’t what it’s supposed to do.
I was standing out on the balcony contemplating what to do next. I had no phone with me, and it was a story up. I thought trying to climb down might be a bad idea.
I looked at Gizmo. He was sitting inside… staring at me… like, “What the heck are you doing?”
“Let me in, Gizmo.”
Nothing.
Of course.
Finally, the neighbor came out on his balcony and asked if I was stuck outside. The office was called and I was rescued. 🙂
Gizmo was a good, but never could figure out how to work the lock. Beyond reasonable expectations, I suspect.
We’re always seeing videos of cats jumping up to open doors but a heavy glass sliding patio door is something else and I can imagine Gizmo sitting there thinking about it – but realising it was just way out of his league.
Having had a cat for 16 years I can imagine THAT look on his face as he peered at you through the glass, followed by a long licking session and then trotting off to find his favourite place for a nap.
Classic stuff.

Silverback – Exactly. Watching with detached interest. Wondering momentarily what the human will do next. lol
Tan – A big housecat with really long hair, like a persian, but not such a pushed-in face. 🙂

smiling – oh I love that story…
my Harvey is a great cat, but I ask him things and more often than not he looks at me as if I’m an idiot or something; but then, if I’m feeling a bit low he still comes over and lets me pet him (or maybe he’s just hoping I’ll get him some more wet-food) 🙂
