20 Happy Things

I’m trying to start a trend.

  1. Talking to your dogs and having them look at you, as if to say, “Can I have more chicken please?  We love you…”
  2. Standing outside and being “in the moment” enough to feel a soft breeze and peace-of-mind blowing by you.
  3. Feeling like life is finally starting to straighten out.
  4. Noticing the kindness of strangers, like the grocery store clerk who wants to know if I can manage all my bags, or the lady at Bank of America who acts like it’s not the end of the world to forget your passcode and you are not able to reset it because you need your credit card, which is newly reissued and in transit, to reset your passcode (it’s a viscious circle, really, all solved if you know your last payment amount and the exact date you made the payment)
  5. Your last night alone before your little kid comes back.
  6. Having time away from said little kid, even when you don’t think you need it (you BOTH do)
  7. Knowing someone got your kid to eat tuna and like it.
  8. Paying the last of June’s bills.
  9. Having enough energy to go to the grocery when you’re fixing dinner and you suddenly decide you need salsa with cilantro.
  10. Noticing the sunset.
  11. Knowing that walking your dogs is not only fun, but good exercise/thinking time.
  12. Daydreaming about arrival gates.
  13. Talking to my favourite poet for 3 hours at a time.
  14. Thinking about canoeing and the chance that I will not actually have a heart attack whilst parasailing.
  15. Being productive at work.
  16. Spending the day doing design stuff (even though it was something little and frustrating!)
  17. Driving through a heavy rainstorm and not having to worry about getting hit by any falling trees or power lines.
  18. Opening the windows and letting some fresh air in, after having 90 degree (F) weather.
  19. Appreciating the neighbor’s flower garden, which luckily flows into your yard.
  20. Loving and being loved.

  1. What a lovely group of aspirations. Somewhere I once read that ‘Life is what happens while you’re planning for the future’……most of your ideas cost nothing so go ahead and grab them with both hands!

  2. I’m a big fan of #2. I look forward to every trash night, when I take the barrel to the curb and just stand there in the cool breeze admiring the stars, looking for Orion, and savoring the scents of the river and woods.

  3. IP – Completely true. I think happiness lies in “the now” and the future is in our own hands. We just have to reach for it and go..

Ian – I could see where you would think the ATM could accomplish whatever the teller had to do, but it’s nice to talk a live person. The teller checks my math, where the ATM machine couldn’t care less. 🙂

Dave – I’m agree. Have you ever read, “The Power of Now”. Good book.

  4. Daffy – Thanks… I plan to focus on these things more often. 🙂 Did you come up with 20? It’s kind of refreshing to write, really.

  7. Gem – I think so, too. I may do this weekly.

Brennig – Tuna is not actually the spawn of the devil. 🙂 Someone has just made you believe this.

  8. Tan – I rented “The Power of Now” as an audio book from the library. It’s a good guide for refocusing.

I quite like the thought of arrival gates. The nervous dance is too funny (and cute). xx

  10. Tan – No.. it’s more of a buddhist approach to calming stress. Basically, it teaches you to focus on your immediate surroundings to take your attention away from what is stressing you out.

I think this might be a valuable thing to add to my iPod when I attempt to go on really high “ferris wheels” … or parasailing.

I like your new barbie icon. Too cute! xx
