Casey Anthony – How lucky can you get?

I think most right-thinking people would agree that things looked pretty bad for Casey Anthony. Casey Anthony was accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony, and disposing of her body in a trash bag, which was tossed into a swampy area not far from her home.

For 31-days, Casey lied to her parents about where she was and where her daughter was.  She was REALLY with her boyfriend partying in Orlando.  The end of her freedom came when Casey’s mom found her and insisted on knowing where Caylee was. She was arrested and charged with the murder of her daughter, having told police that Caylee was stolen by what turned out to be a non-existant nanny.

Prosecutors alleged Casey Anthony used chloroform to render her daughter unconscious and then duct-taped her mouth and nose to suffocate her. They said that she put the child’s body in the trunk of her car for a few days before disposing of it. Caylee’s skeletal remains were discovered 无码毛片内射白浆视频 11, 2008, by former Orange County meter reader Roy Kronk. – cnn.com

Caylee was last seen in June of 2008 and her remains were found, completely decomposed in 无码毛片内射白浆视频 of 2008.

After 3 years, Casey was finally tried and… acquitted. Shockingly. Why? Because as perfectly sensible and strong the prosecution’s case was, no matter how well they tied all of the lies and behavior into a situation where a mother didn’t appear to be grieving over her “accidentally deceased” daughter, no one had the ability to determine Caylee’s cause of death.

There was no DNA anywhere, although I believe there was a hair from Caylee in Casey’s car trunk which was proven to be from a dead body, and didn’t match the length or non-treated composition of any hair in the Anthony home… except for the possibility of Caylee.

I am not sure how to feel. I look at the footage of her being acquitted and think, “How often does that happen?” She thought she would spend her whole life in prison, I’m sure.” I think her parents did, as well, since they indicated through their attorney that they didn’t think she was innocent, but they didn’t want her to be executed, either. But instead, she’s about to be free.  How often does someone get such a drastic second chance at life?

Then I wonder what kind of life she will have. Lots of people have become emotionally involved. Loads of people have watched every day of the trial. The prosecution’s case was so strong and the defense’s case seemed so full of lies and holes, it wasn’t even funny. Yet, she is walking.   I hope she will spend her life doing really useful and important things.

Also, I think about little Caylee and how unfair it is that she died and no one will be blamed or

have to suffer legally for it. No one will have to sit in a cell and think about what they did to get themselves there.   No one is going to jump up at this point and say, “Ok, this is exactly what happened to her.” It still seems that Casey doesn’t even grieve for her. All I’ve heard is that she is talking about adopting or having other children. You had one, you know. Do you even care or know what happened to her? Just once, can you stand up and say with some emotion, “I miss my daughter so much. I wish I could have her here with me now.”

I don’t think it’s going to happen. And it might be a lie if it does.

I would just like to say that I believed the prosecution team, and they did an impeccable job.   Too bad the police didn’t look for little Caylee’s remains several months earlier, when they were first seen and reported.  😦

Casey won’t even talk about Caylee in a loving way.  That’s what makes me sad.

Casey Anthony’s lawyer said Wednesday that her acquittal signified justice for little Caylee Anthony, who prosecutors unsuccessfully argued died at the hands of her mother.

“Caylee would never have wanted her mother to suffer this way,” defense attorney Jose Baez told Barbara Walters of ABC News. “Caylee certainly never wanted her mother to die.”

I don’t know, Mr. Baez. She probably wouldn’t, but she didn’t deserve to have her life cut short. Too bad you can’t figure out what really did happen to her. Or maybe the prosecution team already knows.

Father’s Day

It started with this

.. present opening..

.. a few international phonecalls to our dads living overseas..

.. a trip to Lauritzen Gardens, where we viewed lots of interesting gardens and rode the tram (it was a hot day!)

2026-05-21

Then we dined on amazingly grilled amazing steak and corn-on-the-cob.

It was a good day.

Good weekend

We spent a few hours Saturday at the Summer Arts Festival.   It was interesting to walk through the artist’s stalls and see what they had for sale.    Brit bought a signed photograph taken of a polar bear underwater.  We’ve framed it and hung it on the wall.

The band at the festival was a Native American rock band called Brulé.    We took video but the background noise really took away our ability to do their music justice.   So you can read about them here:  http://www.brulerecords.com/isis/promovid3.html and here: http://www.brulerecords.com/home.html.

We spent an hour or so on Sunday at the Omaha Farmer’s Market in Aksarben Village.   There are a lot of people walking their dogs there, and it’s always nice to meet them.   We bought a few things, like a new collar for Molly, our mini-schnauzer, and some ground beef from Thistle and Clover.  We’re cooking some burgers for dinner (when I say “we”, I mean “Ian”) and topping them with chèvre and some habanero paste from JPaste.

My parents are on their way back to Italy.    They’ve had loads of travelling in the last week.   When they get back, I bet work will be relaxing.  We’ll see.  I always get incredible jetlag (in a flu-sort of way) going that direction.

It was good to see them.   I hope we’ll see them again soon!

A visit from my parents

My parents flew out from Italy.  It’s been their first trip to the US since they moved to Italy (temporarily) last year.   It was nice to catch up with them and show them around the bits of Omaha they hadn’t seen yet.

This is us (sorry, Ian is taking the picture) laughing because Brit kept laughing.

We ate at a really nice restaurant called Firebirds, which has wonderful steak, by the way.  Ian cooked an amazing dinner of pork chops, potato salad, potato wedges (for those against eating potato salad.. is there anyone?  Oh.. Brittany!), and a lovely salad with homemade vinaigrette.

We toured Village Point’s shopping area, went to Kohl’s to do some shopping, then my dad bought loads of Jiffy cake mix and other various things to send back to Italy.

Oh, and we couldn’t miss going down to the Missouri River to see how overflowing it was.

Weather. It’s Hot.

For the last two days it’s been 100F (that’s about 38c) where we live.   Today, it’s in the upper 80’s.   I cannot tell the difference.   All I can say is, “Thank goodness for air conditioning”.    If we lived in the UK right now, or many other places,  I would probably be dead by now.  From the heat.

According to the weather service, it’s been AGES since it’s been 100F in June.

I wonder what July and August will be like, really.

I was just out at the pool with Brit, and our neighbor said that her neighbor on the first level got a bill for $220 some-odd for air conditioning this month.  I’m not sure how she managed that.  We have our thermostat set around 74F,  and ours was in the mid-70’s.

I was a bit worried about what the bill would be.  We’re on the top floor with no insulating apartments around us.. sun beating down all day.   Of course, in July when it’s probably going to be 425F, it may be a bit more.   🙂  Ok, maybe just 110F.

Holidays are nice..

For some reason, I didn’t notice that I wasn’t taking much vacation time during the year, so I’m catching up now.  Our vacation year runs from the end of June one year to the end of June the next year.    So I have to use what I have before the end of June, or I lose whatever I have left.

So, this week, I’m off Monday – Thursday, and next week, I’m off Wednesday – Friday.    My parents are coming from Italy to the US for a week (whirlwind tour starting in Dallas), so that will be next week’s fun.

This coming week is Brit’s final day and 1/2 at elementary school.  They have 1/2 day Wednesday, then that’s it.   It will be sad to not be around all of the people who I’ve gotten to know and who’ve supported her over the last 6 years.   The secretary is always so cheerful.   The teachers are awesome and the afterschool program is just as great.   The afterschool program director and his assistants have been there since Brit was 4 and starting kindergarten, and have really been exceptional at what they do.     Sometimes, I would walk in to pick Brit up and there was happy shouting coming from 100 kids simultaneously as they did their activities.   I would look at the directors like, “Oh my gosh.. how do you do this?”   But they did it well, and I’m grateful.

Even though we’ve been through a lot of changes over the last several years, I’m happy that we’ve been able to keep Brit in the same school.   The continuity has been good for her.    Next year, she’ll be going to a school further away, just to be with her same friends.   In junior high, they blend 5 elementary schools together, so she’ll have lots of new people to meet, too.

And then Brit’s whirlwind summer schedule starts.   We have her going to summer school, band camp and some 3 week activity at the theater to do with puppetry.

Tomorrow..  Adventureland!    I hope it’s warm and sunny.   A few weeks ago when the girl scouts went, it was raining most of the time, until they shut the park, and then the sun came out.  🙂  (sod’s law)

Omaha Zoo

We spent part of Sunday at the Omaha Zoo. It was a warm day, and a good one to see all the outdoor animals milling about.

In the winter, we still go to the zoo. Even when it’s -20F outside, there are still some pretty amazing indoor exhibits to see: The Leid Jungle, the Desert Dome, The Aquarium, Butterfly House and Kingdoms of the Night.

We took loads of video in the gorilla enclosure. The gorillas were quite active, and chasing each other around. In one of the hallways, a mother was standing by a window getting ready to put her toddler in a stroller, and one of the gorillas slowly peered into the window from below. It was hilarious!

Here’s a video from the day:

How To Be Annoyed at the US Postal Service

So we send my mother, who is currently in Italy, a mother’s day present.   In April.   It was a busy day, so I asked Ian to post the box, having already paid for the postage and filled out the likely customs form.    The post office wanted a different customs form, so a new one was completed, only the post people didn’t bother to check to see that the customs form address matched the address already on the box.  It was all ok, except it had the word “Italy” on it, which sent it through the Italian post instead of military mail, where it belonged.

Nevermind that the postage was printed via computer on a Click-to-Ship form, with the correct address, that should have sent the box through the military mail system correctly.  This was taped to the front of the box.   Instead, people are going to go by the customs form that had the word “Italy” on it and ship it through the Italian mail system.   After languishing in the Italian post for 3 weeks, someone thought it would be a good idea to just return the box to us:  “Adresse insuffisante”.

Who knew people would use the customs form for the actual mail delivery?    The USPS likely did!   Just one reason to match up addresses… because that’s what they do for a lot of the day, right?

I can see how the click-to-ship address pasted on the front of the box with boldfaced type would be difficult to miss.

Sigh.

Funny that on the way back to us from Bethpage, NY, the box went through military mail.

Really?

The Royal Wedding

Ian and I woke up at 4:30 am last Friday to see the Royal Wedding Live (on TV).    It was an amazing event.   I felt like I was there, and I was really glued to my TV until the kiss on the balcony.   Everything was so beautiful.

I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what the dress, which had been speculated about endlessly, looked like.    I couldn’t wait to see the groom’s face when he saw the bride or to hear all of the traditional pieces of a royal wedding..  live.

It’s different when you see it later in the media.  Bits are chopped off and transformed into a good media piece.  I wanted a chance to see the whole thing, as it happened, and I was glad to be able to.

Brit came in while the crowd was assembling outside the balcony.  I said, “Look, Brit!   They’re about to kiss on the balcony.  It’s a big deal!  Look at the crowd!”   She was equally impressed.

I was excited for Britain that day, seeing people happy and celebrating together.

We’ll have to fly in for the next one.  🙂

Photos I found taken by someone who was there.
