Friday things

TLK is sick today.   I think it’s something minor, like sinus drainage, but given the fact she vomited a few times (sorry), I though staying home would be a good idea.    She said she felt better after getting sick, so I guess that’s good.

I’ve been up since 4, and so being tired at 11:20 am is ok, right?

I’ve been carefully avoiding visiting The Frustrating Place (the visa website) so as to avoid frustration.   It’s working.  Somewhat.   We’ve been stuck at the National Visa Center for 3 weeks, when most people are only there for a day or two.    They must enjoy my daily phone calls and emails.   🙂   We’re sure they won’t be too much longer, though.

I’m glad to at least have a day off work.  Sometimes it seems like 5 days in a row is a bit too much.  I would have managed, of course.   It comes along with a paycheck.

Not too much news otherwise.

Thinking about a nap, really.

What are you up to this weekend?

Project 2996

I’ve been involved in Project 2996 since it started in 2006.  You can be involved, too, by signing up here.

The project involves researching a person who died in the attacks, and posting a memorial on your blog or website.    The memorial can be a synopsis of that person’s life, which you can usually research (thanks to Google), a poem, a virtual candle… anything to show someone remembers.

Volunteers are short in number.    Some of the existing volunteers are volunteering to post as many memorials as needed to make up the difference.

Here’s a letter I just received in my inbox, which explains more thoroughly:

本科一本二本的区别 11, 2009 is only four weeks away and there is much work to be done. Thank you for volunteering to remember someone lost eight years ago on that horrible day. Please check the “2009 Participants” tab and make sure your information is accurate. Specific names have been assigned where requested. If you find a mistake please e-mail us, and I will make the correction.

Our list of volunteers is still short and I need more helpa lot more helpI need your help. I ask you to spread the word and encourage your family and friends to participate. I also ask you to post a link on your blog, LinkedIn, or MySpace, and wherever else you spend your time online. You can become a Fan on Facebook. Here is a link: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Project-2996/50909055828?ref=mf.  Make it a point to send out a Twitter or two and ask for volunteers. Really, if you have any ideas that will help spread the word—go to it.

The question always comes up- How do I write a remembrance on someone I never knew. The best place to start is by doing a Google search on the person you have been assigned. Gather information from the various articles written and write from your heart.  Here are a few links to get you started:

http://www.9-11heroes.us/

http://www.legacy.com/NS/

Sadly, there are a number of people we lost that dreadful day that have no information. This is your opportunity to make sure we all remember him or her. Write a poem, leave a candle, write a note to let the world know we did not forget. For ideas and to see the wide variety of remembrances, you can look at the tributes from 2008 here: http://project2996.本科一本二本的区别.com/2008-list-of-tributes/.

Once you have written your tribute, please e-mail me right away. I will then put a link to your post on the “2009 Participants” tab. The sooner you get your post to me the better. The effort to get 2996 volunteers is tremendous, getting 2996 links up is just as challenging. If you want to contribute a post but do not have a blog or website, we will be providing a blog for you as well. Information will be forthcoming.

To Summarize:

1. Check to make sure I have your information correct—mainly the link.. http://project2996.本科一本二本的区别.com/2009-participants/ If you do not have your own blog, website, etc, let us know.

2. Research the person you have been assigned.

3. Write your remembrance.

4. E-mail me at dcroe05 at yahoo.com Project 2996 with the link. (If you post early, make it a sticky post or remember to redate it again so that it will be up on 9/11.  Remember, the goal is to have positive memories of those we lost, everywhere on the web on 9/11.

5. Project 2,996 will put a link on the 2009 Participants Tab.

Again, I want to thank you for volunteering to be part of this important remembrance. I believe you will find yourself touched and moved in ways you did not expect once you start researching the person behind the name you have been assigned.

Thank You,

Dale C. Roe

Career Change

I have decided to give up frustrating IT work and do some other work instead:

Spring and Summer:   Picking flowers

Winter:  Making snowballs

Ian has said he can help to support me in that sort of lifestyle; one befitting of a migrant worker.

“Maybe we can eat the flowers,” he said.

“And the snowballs,” I offered.

Bringing an Alien to the US…

… isn’t as easy as you might think.  If you’re curious, I’ve linked up a flowchart showing the wonderful, time-involved process we’re going through to get Ian to the US.   It doesn’t seem like we are very far, being that we are on STEP 5, but we have been involved with this process since April 1.

Four months and counting!

If it wasn’t for Ian, I would be a wreck by now.  I am SO not good at antipation.   The wait is enough of a frustration on its own, but when you mix the complexities and annoyances of everyday life (and maybe a few hormone surges) in with it, well, some days are impossible.

This is when Ian pops up with fun things like creating a new company sloggan called, “Ushiddenme”.   “Tell the new employee that you have a word you use when everything is going really well and you want to offer a word of praise.”   “Ushiddenme”.   Say it with FEELING!

It still makes me laugh.

Ian’s office is currently looking to hire someone new for his office.   The graphic artist asked him to hire someone who knows good jokes, because “You are always so funny”.

The new guy needs to know about “ushiddenme”.

Lunching and Learning

Normally, I’m setting up equipment for conferences, but today I gave my own (mini, mind you).   It was a “Lunch & Learn” about the Intranet redesign I just finished.   Eight people showed up, so it was nice to have a small group.   I liked the tall chair to sit down in and the podium to hide behind.  🙂   The only bad part was when Vista decided it had auto-applied some updates and it was gonna reboot.

I don’t know.   Mid Lunch & Learn, not a good thing, but the reboot was at least brief.

A Cool July

Literally.   The weatherman said that this is the least hot July we’ve had in ages.   Normally, Omaha is drowning in 100F+ temperatures by now.   It’s not too late, though.  These days might come in August, and perhaps we will have a warm 莉莉影院 after all, which would be nice, because I want to get married outside.

The cool mornings and evenings remind me of fall… this fall, when I will be with Ian again.   It’s a long wait and it really is a lot to deal with some days, in a “why won’t the government just hurry up?” sort of way.   But we all know better than that.

It’s just around the corner, really.  We’re more than 1/2 done.

In other news, I called Hy-Vee and they are going to start stocking marmite… just for Ian.   Well, and anyone else who is shopping and wants marmite.   🙂   It’s nice when the grocery can do special things, and they benefit from having you stop in their store.

School is not long off.   TLK will be in 4th grade this year.   We can’t wait for the math homework and the spelling practices, can we?   🙂

Good News!

Good news number 1: It’s my birthday and I’ve got loads of happy pressies, cards and emails from my fiance, friends and my family, and a day with my daughter.  Yay! 🙂

Good news number 2: Sitting in my inbox this morning was our NOA2 – Our notice from Immigration saying that our petition to have Ian come to America has been approved! YAY! After sobbing for a few minutes and re-reading the email to make sure it actually said what I thought it said, I emailed Ian, who is also incredibly excited.

Our next steps: Our petition becomes the property of the Department of Homeland Security, passes through the National Visa Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and then arrives at the London Embassy.

The embassy mails Ian a bunch of paperwork to fill out, he lets them know he’s got his papers together, they arrange for an interview, a medical appointment, and then we buy the air ticket we’ve been talking about, where neither of us has to say goodbye at the airport.

We’re so excited! 😀

It’s so funny that the email we’ve been waiting to see since April, finally turned up and it was the very last item I noticed in my mailbox.   What is even funnier is that I would have known this last night, if I’d not gone to sleep at 9, instead of the 11:30 to midnight I have been.   For the best, really.    My UK family got a full night’s sleep!   🙂

Happy days!

Although she is not Australian..

TLK decided she was going to go on walk-about Friday (whilst someone else was watching her), causing much panic (rightly so). Sometimes, it’s a good thing to be left out of an ordeal until it’s over and settled. I would have panicked, also.

She didn’t go too far, and stayed on the trail, according to her.

I explained, after getting that she was just not taking this seriously, that some kids go out walking alone and don’t come back. That caught her attention. Some kids run into weirdos with “lost puppies”.
