iPod Shuffle

I bought a new toy today; an iPod Shuffle in green. I’ve been spending some time figuring out how to share the music already downloaded for my husband’s iPod and import music from my CD’s.

I thought this would be a cool think to wear on my motorcycle… low enough so that I can still hear emergency vehicle sirens, mind you.

I like that it’s small and can clip onto my clothes. It holds 1 gb of music, which is all I really need, and the sound is not too shabby.

The Harley Davidson Factory

Yesterday, we took a whirlwind trip to the Harley Davidson Factory. We started out at 7:30am. The plan was to meet a group at Village Inn, then drive down to St. Joseph, Missouri, stop for breakfast, walk through the Harley Davidson shop, then book it to Kansas City for the tour.

We were part of a group of about 20 bikes travelling south on Highway 75. We stopped after an hour to fuel up. St Joe was only an hour away. Or so we thought.

Two hours later, we were still riding! The guy in charge missed the turn and we ended up in Topeka. Thank God we were due for fuel, and part of our group broke off to get some, because my rear-end was killing me, both feet were asleep, and the wind beating against my head was doing wonders for my neck.

We got onto Highway 70 and rode from Topeka to Kansas City, 100 miles that we shoudn’t have had to go.

We spent about 1/2 hour in the Harley factory, which wasn’t as exciting as one would think, since the factory is non-operational on Saturday. Picture a bunch of big machines, hooks with gas tanks and other parts on them, and a bunch of pipes laying out.

That was pretty much it.

Not having had any food at all yet, we hit the concession stand for the best pork tenderloin I’ve ever had. I took off my boots and dug my feet in the grass. They started to get some feeling back into them.

We decided we were ready to get out of there. We hopped onto I-29 this time, just our small group of 6, and headed for St. Joe for more fuel. This is where the heat and the ride and going 100 miles out of our way just finally rang it’s toll on me, and it was either take a long air-conditioned break, or I was going to fall over.

After about an hour in the Harley shop that we intended to visit that morning, I felt good enough to get going again. A couple of hours later, we scooped our kid up from her sister’s house and headed home.

I put 450 miles on my bike yesterday. My longest trip before that was 75 miles! I think I did really good for being mostly an in-town driver.

Could it be hotter?

For the last few weeks, the weather here has been unbearable. Actual temperatures have been in the middle to high 90’s, but the “feel like” temperature, thanks to the extreme humidity has been in the 100’s.

Our house is 73 degrees inside. Coming from outside, it feels like it’s 32 degrees. All of our 1st level windows are steamy, like a sauna. Because, that’s what it is outside.

But thank God for air conditioning. Some people aren’t so lucky. I hope they are heading for the mall mid-day, if just to take in some air.

80 Years Old

Yesterday, we went to visit Aunt C, my husband’s aunt, who was celebrating her 80th birthday. Aunt C is very alert mentally, and in my opinion, looks good for her age.

Her family threw her a party with cake and punch. Her friends and family from all over, as far as Wisconsin, came to celebrate.

She looks good for 80, and I hope she had a great day.

Closing Ceremonies of Girl Scout Camp

Today, although camp won’t end for a couple of days, were the closing ceremonies for Girl Scout camp. While the beginning of the experience turned out to be quite a dilemma.. field trips to parts of Omaha I wouldn’t even go to were involved.. it has proven to be a really nice experience.

My daughter met girls from all over the city. Although “base camp” was an elementary school gymnasium, there were frequent field trips to the pool, to museums, to the zoo, to a tree farm, and a week at actual day camp (the “wilderness” so-to-speak). She learned to ice skate, jump off diving boards and deal with a girl or two who were not nice. And we know ALL KINDS of new songs!
I learned not to be overly frightened of her going new places and trying new things. She was always returned safe and sound, usually bouncing around and full of a day’s worth of stories.
Overall, you couldn’t beat Girl Scout camp with any other program.
And I’m so proud of what she’s accomplished.

Robin Roberts has Breast Cancer

It’s not easy to say “I have breast cancer“. A few months ago, I was wondering if I would have to say those words and have to absorb them, do something about them and hope to survive to watch my daughter grow up.

I had a mammogram with no problems reported, but later on, some worrisome symptoms occurred. My doctor decided to have the problem checked out with an MRI. It was costly, even with insurance, but worth it for the peace of mind that “Nothing is wrong” gave me.

I plan to follow Robin’s story and not only pray for her well-being, but the well-being of all people who deal with the anxiety and treatment this disease brings.
