TLK-isms

One of my arms (and corresponding hands) has felt oddly cold, off and on, since the spider tried to eat it off.

I went into TLK’s room on Saturday and put my hands on her arm.

Me: “Feel my hands. Does one feel colder than the other?”
Her: “Erm…. No. They feel the same. You might want to try someone else.”
Me: (laughing) “Who? The dogs?”

Even though Ginger gets quite verbose at times, I’m not quite sure she’d have anything to say that I’d understand. I’m not sure…she’s…coherent, really. 🙂

Bug on me

I thought I had one heck of a bruise, until the pharmacist at work saw it and said, “That looks like a spider bite.   I have friends who’ve had bites like that and their skin dies and they need a skin graft.   You should see your doctor.”

Ok, then.

On the way to my appointment, it did occur to me that I did actually see a spider last week while I was moving things from the basement, but thought nothing of it.

She said it was most probably a bug bite because I have other bruises and they are not fluid filled and the skin is not almost-numb.

I knew there’s a reason I’m terrified of spiders.

I’m on antibiotics.

I think I’ll live.   🙂

A day off

It was quite nice to have the day off today.   I cleaned a little, watched 1/2 a soap opera, chatted for awhile and cooked dinner, while attending to my “feeling much better” child with the strep throat.   The one who owes grandma her undying ouchgratitude for the shot in the leg.   🙂   (no, she will never live that down)

I don’t think I’ve laughed as much as I did today in the last several (4, to be exact) days.   It was nice, in an “Oh Thank God!” sort of way.      I’m lucky to have good people in my life who contribute to my overall well-being.   🙂

After dinner, I’m going to run off to the gym, where I’ve been every day for the last couple of days (just joined it, actually).   I’m excited to be walking/jogging on a treadmill, swimming laps and doing some weightlifting.    And it’s a little “me time”, which everyone needs, right?    I think my abs would disagree right now, after 2 days of surprise intense training.  I might give them a break tonight, though.   They may actually come in useful for silly things, like being able to sit up.

DID YOU KNOW.. that people actually do this with Mars bars?   It ALMOST reminds me of this thing that Green Giant is now doing with vegetables, but hopefully more calorie/fat intensive.    I suppose, as a snack, the nugget approach to vegetables beats letting them eat candy.   But really, I still can’t see buying them.   My daughter was perfectly happy with actual fresh steamed broccoli last night.   Yay!

Prescription Drugs In My Drinking Water

This would explain a lot, actually.  🙂  I wonder what sort of drugs are in my drinking water…  Xanax?  Oxycodone?   I knew there was a reason why I should back off the water and drink Diet Coke instead.

The news thinks that the reason (in addition to lack of good enough filtering) drugs might be in the drinking water has to do with the amount of drugs not absorbed into the body, then excreted in the toilet.   I, for one, prefer to think of my water coming from some virgin spring somewhere… not someone’s toilet.

Also, I imagine a lot of people, when cleaning out their medicine cabinets, flush their unused or unneeded medication.  Don’t you?

After a surgery a few years ago, I took some Oxycodone and some blood thinning meds to my work for disposal.  The pharmacist said, “Thanks for not flushing them.  We have enough chemicals in our water already.”   I’m not sure what they do with the leftover drugs.

Strep

The little kid was sick last night… sore throat, upset stomach, just wanted to go to sleep.    There was a promise of swimming today (before the sickness came on).  She was going to great lengths to convince me she was perfectly fine to swim today, but when I asked her if she was telling me the truth, she would turn away from me and say, “Mom!  I’m telling you the truth!”

So I looked in the throat and it was red and lumpy.  Not a good sign.

A trip to the doctor and 3 swabs later (she grabbed the first two… bad gag reflex) and some corresponding crying, strep was diagnosed.     My mom said, “Have them give her the shot.  She’ll feel better faster.”      The syringe had a long needle, applied to her leg, and the meds were thick.   It was not good.    She cried and limped for awhile, but she did get a nice toy rabbit out of it.  :

Not Sleeping

I’m just tired of not sleeping. In the early morning hours stretching from 3:30 to 5:00, I am awake, staring off and on at the clock. This is annoying, especially when it happens most days, and all I really want is sleep.

Used to be that I would count on Ambien at times like this, but the last couple of times I took Ambien, it was not very effective. Where I used to be completely knocked out within 15 minutes, for example, not working.

Used to be that I could just get up, browse around on the Internet for awhile, then go back to bed. Not working.

Used to be that I could get up, start watching TV, and feel tired again. Sleep a few more hours later in the morning. No luck.

The need to sleep sometimes hits me at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, which is quite inconvenient, considering I am usually either working or doing something otherwise meaningful at that time of the day.

Advice?

A Little Basketball?

On the way home, I bought a basketball. I read that kids who are overweight have inactive mothers. I’m not sure why this would be a mother’s fault, but just in case I would eventually have an overweight child and it would be my fault, I decided to get something fun that we could get some exercise with.

Basketball is good exercise because you’re always running unexpectedly in different directions for different reasons… fetching the ball, shooting the ball, blocking the person with the ball.

It’s not like running, where you know you’re running from point A to point B and back again. I know people enjoy running like that, but for me, it’s too predictable.

I would like to know, however, why odd things seem to be my fault today. Is it just my day? Today, I got blamed for not fixing a help desk issue while I was away at lunch.

What took you so long?

Hi. I go to lunch. For a whole hour. I wish it was longer.

Thankyouverymuch.

Colds..

So, to send out the summer with a sad hurrah, I caught a summer cold. I suspect The Little Kid as the unwilling donor of the errant cold germs. It started on Sunday, when riding the motorcycles on a 2 hour round-trip. About 2 blocks from home, I thought, “I just want to fall over”, but of course, this is a bad idea when you have to balance.

I spent the next day and 1/2 in bed, just totally out of it… sweating, chills, night sweats, panging in the side of my head,; the earmark of severe congestion.

It’s really important to buy the minimal medicine you can get when you’ve got a cold to alleviate symptoms for, too. I bought the Tylenol Extra Strength, “I have the worst cold ever” formula. Too much Guaifenesin when a cold is just starting is not necessarily good.. Dry coughing ensued. A lot of it.

Day 3, stopped the, “I feel dead” medicine and bought just a decongestant. Supplemented with Tylenol every 6 hours. When I neglected to take the Tylenol on time, the chills came on, and I could not get warm quick enough.

I think I’m making some headway, though. I’m not needing the Tylenol every 6 hours. The head panging is nearly gone. Only the lovely cough remains. I’m still trying to decide if that’s doctor worthy or not.

Strep is Not Fun

The Little Kid came home early yesterday with a headache, stomachache and a fever of 101.7 F. We dosed her up with Motrin a couple of times and her temperature went to normal. It was normal after a few hours of the Motrin’s advertised range of 6-8 hours.

This morning, there was no temp, no symptoms, so off to school.

At 12:45, I got a phone call saying the temp was up to 100.7. I scooped her up and waited for an opening at the dr’s office. My appointment was at 4:10. I got in at 5:30.

The strep test was positive, so a prescription for amoxcillin was called in.

The pharmacy and the insurance company battled it out for an hour in an effort to win my daughter’s correct date of birth. While they battled, no medicine would be dispensed, even when we offered to pay for it and get reimbursement.

Finally, with a dose of amoxcillin in her system, we’re still not having luck keeping the temperature down. Apparently, those white blood cells are duking it out with those little strep molecules. Little bastards.

So, I’m off work tomorrow while my coworker takes care of my training classes (I’m teaching… or not) for the second day in a row. God bless him, anyway.

I just hope the temp drops tomorrow. And the throat pain goes away. I know that pain all too well. I was a strep recipient all through jr. and sr. high, on an annual basis.

Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.

If My Brain Explodes, Just Put it Back Together For Me, K?

I’ve had a day that would make anyone’s brain explode, but my head actually hurts because of severe congestion in my sinuses. The stabbing pains start at the top of my head and end at my ear. Someone make it stop.

I’ve been popping decongestants and Tylenol for the last couple of days and it’s not getting any better. I’m about to head for a long, hot shower.
