Pit Bulls Make Good Pets

This slideshow is too cool.    It shows the pit bulls seized at Michael Vick’s illegal pit bull fighting facility becoming a part of the normal pet world.

I used to own a pit bull.   His name was Cujo.   A brindle and white pit bull, he was tall for his breed, and weighed 60 pounds.   When out on the lead in the yard, he would scare the crap out of anyone walking up the street.  I mean, they would stop dead in their tracks and stare.   I could never figure out why.    To me, he didn’t look scarey.   He was muscular, though.

He was the perfect pet, sweet and gentle.   At night, if I was alone, I would lock him in my room with me.   I figured if anyone broke in, they would have to deal with him first.   If they were like the passersby, they would freak out and leave.

Cujo died several years ago of cancer.

It still amazes me that anyone uses animal fighting as a way to make a buck.

And the Praying Mantis Wins

For several weeks, there has been a huge spider setting up a web on our deck. I’m terrified of spiders, but when the spider is big and it’s staying away from me, then I can cohabitate.. from a distance.

Last night, when I let the dogs out, I noticed a praying mantis stuck in the web. I wanted to do something, but I wasn’t sure how to get the mantis out of the web without:

1. Destroying the web; and
2. Having the web on me; and
3. Sending the big spider running .. God knows where.

So, I decided to let nature take its course, and thought the mantis would be lunch.

Well, either the spider doesn’t like mantis’s or the mantis was a little Houdini-like, because he was sitting on our screen this morning.

Meet My New Dog..

It’s an african hunting dog, actually housed at the zoo, with the rest of these critters..

A common prairie dog

River otter

Black swan and koi

One of many beautiful peacocks

We were at the Omaha Zoo for around 3 hours, early enough not to catch a lot of heat. It was scout day, so we got in for a discounted price. 🙂

Peek-A-Boo

During one of the recent walks in our neighborhood, we noticed this big guy looking at us from over the fence. The fence is 6 feet tall, people. He also tries to talk. If you’ve been around a chatty dog before, you know what I mean. It’s somewhere between barking and trying to say a few human words. 🙂

A Drop of Dawn Makes a Difference

A Drop of Dawn Makes a Difference. And So Can You.

I have been reading about a serious problem, and would like you to know about it. Oil in our nation’s waterways harms, even kills, birds and other wildlife—and most of this oil comes from things we do in our homes, everyday.

Thankfully, Dawn has been helping these animals for over twenty-five years, and lisa is helping them spread the word. View my e-card here and you can start making a difference today.
