Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the US. We’re off to my husband’s aunt’s and uncle’s house for dinner. Our contribution is a relish tray. It was kind of fun picking out what to put in it:

Cubed mild cheddar cheese
garlic stuffed green olives
black olives
candied apple rings
celery stuffed with pineapple neufchatel cheese
deviled eggs
grape tomatoes
tiny sweet pickles
and some Ritz crackers

I’m thankful for not having to cook an entire dinner. For me, it was either “get an invitation from someone” or “go to a restaurant for dinner”. Every time I decide to cook, I get the flu.

Seriously. I’m jinxed that way.

Visit to the Durham Western Heritage Museum

map showing the train station

The Durham Western Heritage Museum used to be a train station, the main mode of transportation in Omaha. I have never been to this particular museum, that I recall. The downstairs part of the museum contains a train track with 3 Pullman cars, an engine and many other interesting artifacts.

One room contained old fashioned stoves and sewing machines. One contained a grocery, complete with packages of food from that time. One area had different jewels and stones that had been donated; huge chunks of turqoise and other beautiful pieces. There was an old school house room, complete with desks and a chalkboard that said, “Happy Thanksgiving”, which my daughter said was “odd”. She thought it had been written ages and ages ago. 🙂

The fun part of the museum for me was walking through those old train cars and seeing this map, which showed the station back when it was functional.

It’s been wonderfully preserved. It doesn’t look like one chandelier or one bench has ever been replaced.

I’m an Intranet Designer

I finally was able to publish MY rendition of my company’s intranet today. It took some time to wrench the responsibilities away from the person who was doing it before. Then, someone had an idea for a special background that just wouldn’t fall together with the rest of the page. So I plead my case, so to speak, and my idea was approved, and today I published it.

Right now, I’m converting the stylesheet over to CSS so that every page does not have it’s own look and feel. ‘Cause as a former blog designer, that’s how I’m used to seeing pages designed.

I would like to give it more flash, but that will come in time.

One of the managers stopped by and gave me a hard time about always changing the Intranet. “It’s different every time I go into it”.

Welcome to my world of design, sister. 🙂

Red Leaf Lettuce Salad, Yummy Yummy

Ages ago, I promised a picture of one of my dinner salads. This one contained red leaf lettuce, avacado slices, roma tomato chunks, onion slilces, seasoned chicken breast slices, blue cheese dressing and walnuts on the top.

The flavors meshed nicely together. We agreed, though, that next time, some hard-boiled eggs would add some great flavor to it.

Life Lessons

We had to sit down with my daughter and explain how sometimes people are a product of their environment.

There’s a girl at school who my daughter said was always yelling at her. I’ve met her and felt sorry for her because no one would pick her as a partner for lunch, and she would be upset/pout because of it. If she’s always yelling, I can see why. Six-year-olds don’t know any better. They just know this girl is usually ticked off about something.

We found out purely by accident that this girl was being picked up by Child Protective Services today. I guess her mom is a drug addict and whenever this little girl was at home, she had either NO attention or all BAD attention from her mother. She didn’t have anyone at home to talk to or play with. She wasn’t taught how to wash herself… God knows if she ate every night or not.

Someone finally noticed a problem and called CPS. They went into her home and carried out bags and bags of trash. It was piled up so that you could walk on a clear path through the rooms of the apartment, and that was it.

We had to leave out most of these terrible details and tell our daughter that this girl is upset and shouting because that’s how she is treated at home. We tried to tell her to be patient and be friendly, if possible.

She tried to talk to her today and the little girl told her to leave her alone.

At least she tried.

Friviolity

I was laying in bed flipping through channels this morning and landed on this show where a designer was taking his clients shopping for new bedding. Their current bedroom is all WHITE, and they were trying to introduce new color to the room.

The woman wanted a lot of color. She found an ensemble she liked. The man said, “I couldn’t live with that!”

Ok… there are a lot of live or die issues in the world. A bedspread is not one of them.

Sometimes, it amazes me what people put so much effort into. I guess travelling around town with a home health professional and seeing inside some of the rougher houses in town kind of changed my outlook on things.

Cold, Cold, Go Away!

So the sniffling, my-nose-has-running-all-the-time, cold has turned into an “I have to cough a lot” cold. But I’m not one to complain. I just hope it goes away soon.

I spent part of my night last night watching, “Deal or No Deal” and reading a new book that I can’t remember the name of right now. I’d say around 8:30, the little kid and I passed out in the chair, watching Monday Night Raw (not that this was my idea… it’s just a standard Monday thing at our house).

I’m looking forward to the premier of The Medium on Wednesday.

At least it’s getting me away from my computer. 🙂 That’s good, right?

I overheard a lady today saying that she’s spending her Thankgiving days off driving to Colorado to see family. I could only think about how good it would be to get away for a few days… just to do something fun.

So if anyone has any free airline tickets, toss them my way. I need 3. Not the SPAM kind, though. lol

Severe Colds are not Fun

I’ve been dealing with a severe cold for about 3 days, plus, now. I’m thinking about buying stock in Hall’s Cough Drop division. I could certainly make money, just from my own purchases.

TLK and I are sharing this one, as usual, but kids don’t seem to be as miserable with colds as adults are. She is still giggling and playing, where I am taking naps at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Back to work today. Aren’t Mondays lovely? 🙂
