The Strange Coincidence Between No Internet Connection and the Missing Hamster

So the Cox Communication guy comes over to look at our Internet connection. We only have a few lights lit up on our cable modem, an IP address that’s not getting us anywhere and no Internet.

He started tracing the line from the source to the modem. I went to clear the way in The Little Kid’s closet, because it’s packed with toys. When I pulled the cable up, it was obviously chewed for a good foot, through the insulation, down to the actual wire.

I said, “So at least we know where the hamster was for 2 days”. Thankfully, we have the wiring assurance plan, so no charge for the visit.

I’m surprised the hamster is still coherent. Poor thing.

I’m an Intranet Designer

I finally was able to publish MY rendition of my company’s intranet today. It took some time to wrench the responsibilities away from the person who was doing it before. Then, someone had an idea for a special background that just wouldn’t fall together with the rest of the page. So I plead my case, so to speak, and my idea was approved, and today I published it.

Right now, I’m converting the stylesheet over to CSS so that every page does not have it’s own look and feel. ‘Cause as a former blog designer, that’s how I’m used to seeing pages designed.

I would like to give it more flash, but that will come in time.

One of the managers stopped by and gave me a hard time about always changing the Intranet. “It’s different every time I go into it”.

Welcome to my world of design, sister. 🙂

Flickr’s Non-Pro Limitations

The other day when I was uploading photos, I came across a “Congratulations, you’ve just reached a limit as a Non-Pro customer.” It seems as though Flickr is suddenly holding my photos hostage because I have chosen not to be a “Pro” customer.

I suppose I can’t blame them for setting limitations, but it seemed rather sudden, and I probably have photos stored on Flickr that I don’t have anywhere else, so I’m going to have to go “Pro”, whether I want to or not.

I guess some sort of advanced warning would have been nicer. Maybe I slept through the advanced warning. Hmph.

Really, though… Doesn’t this sound like a ransom note?

Hey moonchild0821! About your photos…

You’ve run into one of the limits of a free account. Your free account will only display the most recent 200 photos you’ve uploaded. All of your photos beyond 200 will remain hidden from view until you either delete newer photos, or upgrade to a Pro account.

None of your photos have been deleted, and if you upgrade, they’ll all come back unharmed.

So I decided to make a Photoblog. For Free.

What is it about Mondays?

Mondays do not rock. I am not sure why that is. It just seems like the weekend is too darn short.

Yesterday, I was sitting in the park behind our house, watching my daughter maneuver her bicycle. I started to wonder… Is it just that I am tired of working? Is it just like college where it just seemed to drag on forever and then it got old? Maybe.

Part of me would like to just sleep in as late as I wanted, wake up to the ocean lapping against the beach and lounging around all day. I’m sure that could last for a good month, and then I’d be begging for something constructive to do!

Today, between cleaning out 3,000 spam items, trying to repair a few laptops that just “gave up” and other miscellaneous help desk calls, I got to change a few things on the Intranet. I published a new job description. Also, I cleaned up the IT page. There’s really not much on it, but at least it is clean now.

One thing I would like to wipe out is a little picture that says, “I love this job. I live for this place. You people are my life.” To the side, it has a computer person slouched over a computer.

I think this is tacky. And besides that, who wants to visit a page where you’re basically telling people to go away?

My Thursday Rocked

So, day two of messing around with the intranet design and doing menial things inbetween, like help desk calls and swapping out hardware. Who knew a person could like working so much? 🙂 I may be about 1/2 done with it all, but I feel a design change coming on… to get it where I want it to be.

I found a new toy today. It’s Browsershots.com. Input your website address and see how your website looks on all sorts of browsers, including Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox. It’s stepsaving if you do design work, or just want to see how things look without loading a bunch of different browsers.

Oh… I got nominated to be on our United Way Campaign. This means some planning with several other people, free lunch and convincing some people it would be nice if they gave money to charity. Mind you, at the non-profit, we don’t make too much ourselves, but they say that “You don’t know the meaning of giving until you’re poor.” lol I’m not poor, but it sounds good anyway.

So, it’s 8pm and I’m off to help my daughter with her birthday thank you’s. Can I have more hours in my day, please?

Intranet Redesign

I spent most of my day on setting up Lisa’s rendition of what our Intranet should look. It was fun playing around with the design. After awhile, I became adventurous and started adding stuff I use on my blog, like Clocklink and a weather doohickey.

I figured out how to plot the navigation and have buttons automatically appear in the navigation bar. The hard thing about it is that you don’t get too see too many examples of what people do with Intranet designs. We had a good one at my previous employer, but of course, no access to it. So I’m winging it with a Frontpage template I found, and it’s not too shabby. It’s keeping my design intact from page to page, so there is a consistancy in the look and feel.

After some time, I felt like I was goofing off. I mean, is work sometimes fun?

So I have my concept started, at least. Tomorrow, more goofing off. 🙂

Microsoft Launches Zune

Microsoft is launching it’s own personal mp3 player. The player will allow music sharing between Zunes, with a limit of 3 plays per share, then the shared music disappears.

The Zune has a large screen, prepared to play movies, it seems. Will it use the Windows Media Player? Sounds like a definite Microsoft engineering practice… make new things that incorporate our current technology. This may not be a bad thing.

The part I find interesting is this:

As part of the Zune launch Microsoft flew some influential music bloggers to Seattle for a preview of the player and the service.

How do I get in on this sort of thing? I want to be flown to the Bahamas to review the Alantis Resort. I will become your biggest fan, I swear!
