I HATE backing out of a parking space. In the UK, we usually back IN so that you come out frontwards. Or go around until you find a double space that you can drive right through to be facing out! At least you can see what the other bastards are doing that way!
However, did that once in Vancouver and got a ticket for parking facing the oncoming traffic ….. eh? Is backing out not more dangerous than driving out?

ps – when in Naples drive like the natives! shut your eyes and just GO!

Cell phone use is banned in Italy also. However, like most laws that seem to be an inconvenience, the ITs ignore it.

Sounds like royal havoc, really. The Americans aren’t far behind. In England, they at least ban people from talking on their cell phones while driving, which I think is a HUGE distraction in America.

Welcome to my world. In Italy – at least in Naples – absolutely no one will cut you a break, and defensive driving has never been heard of. Need to turn left at an intersection, and there is a lot of traffic? This ITs will stop nose-to-tail across your path. Back out of a parking place? You better watch the whole time. If there’s more than 6″ to spare, they will just beep and zoom through – or just zoom through. Going around a blind curve? The ITs may be on their side, your side, or somewhere in between. Lots of traffic and only two lanes? The Its will turn it into three or four lanes – or go the wrong way down the oncoming lane. Driving in the outside lane of a roundabout? Watch the guy on the inside. When he comes to his exit, he will go hard right. Traffic jam on a main highway? Expect the ITs to turn around and go the wrong way back to the last exit. Stop signs? What’s that? The only place I’ve EVER seen an IT stop at a stopsign is on the Naval base. Italy may have been civilized once. Once. No more.

So, the correct thing to write would have been, “I was travelling northward, but had just come to a full stop when some bastard struck my car from behind.” But it was a police report for a car accident that was pretty startling, so I’m sure they got the message, especially with my nifty drawing. I was 18 when that happened. I need to do some new things for people to have a good laugh about. (stomps back into the “cloud” and pouts).
